What is CrossFit Kids? 

CrossFit Kids was founded in 2004 by Jeff and Mikki Martin and is a method for teaching Greg Glassman’s CrossFit to children, ages 3-18. Based on the principle of Mechanics => Consistency => Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance, and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means that consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.

CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for all ages. Broad-Inclusive-General fun. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, which means less childhood obesity and all-around better health for our children. Further, the needs of second graders and high school varsity wrestlers differ by degree and not kind; the program is scalable for any age or experience level and accounts for the varied maturation status one can find in a class full of kids. CrossFit Kids is designed to be minimalist; it is inexpensive and often requires little or no equipment, allowing a wide array of socioeconomic groups an opportunity to be physically fit and physically active throughout their lives.

CrossFit Kids programs can be found in over 1,800 gyms and more than 1,000 schools worldwide.


CrossFit Kids Petoskey

Our CrossFit Kids program is designed specifically for the needs of children. Our goal is to have ‘BIG Fun’ while instilling a lifelong love of fitness. Through learning to work together, play together, and push through challenges together, kids will become more self-confident, better leaders and sportsmen. We truly believe that our kids are our ‘Future of Fitness’.

CrossFit Kids workouts consist of constantly varied, functional movements that deliver a fitness that is broad, inclusive and general. The workouts are scalable for kids of all fitness levels. Since no two workouts are the same, kids stay entertained and excited to participate and have fun. Our goal is to teach kids proper mechanics then consistency then intensity. By focusing on a kid’s life, we teach functional movements needed to: pull, push, play, climb, run, throw, and lift.

All classes are taught by CrossFit Level One and CrossFit Kid Certified Coaches.

CrossFit Kids Petoskey Program Levels  

We have three levels to our CrossFit Kids program.

The “Littles” (Age 3-5)

Classes are 30 minutes long, 1X per week. They consist mostly of games incorporating functional movements. The kids are so busy having “BIG FUN” they don’t realize they are working out.

The “Bigs” (Age 6-10)

Classes are 60 minutes long, 2X per week. These classes start with a dynamic warm-up followed by specific skill work for that day. Finally, a workout lasting no more than 10 to 12 minutes. At this level, the focus is still on proper movement mechanics and consistency. Resistance is added only with mastery of movement. Kids are still having “BIG FUN”, enjoying all the positive benefits of CrossFit.

Teens (Age 11-15)

Classes are 60 minutes long, 2X per week. These classes start with a dynamic warm-up followed by specific skill work for that day. Finally, a workout lasting 10 to 20 minutes. All characteristics and foundational movements of CrossFit are introduced. At this level, intensity can be increased when sound mechanics and consistency are reached. Although fewer ‘games’ are played, we strive to finish each class with a game activity and mobility. “BIG FUN” is obtained through reaching goals and helping each other through challenges, building teamwork and sportsmanship.
